Gastrointestinal Panel (GI)

Gastrointestinal Panel (GI)

Gastroenteritis is very common in all ages and can be caused by either bacterial or viral pathogens. While bacterial gastroenteritis is less common than viral gastroenteritis, it is still a major health risk. Both can cause dehydration from vomiting and/or diarrhea.

Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramping and pain. In severe cases, you may become dehydrated and have an electrolyte imbalance.

These infections are often referred to as food poisoning. You can also acquire an infection by consuming food or water contaminated by bacteria, or the toxic substances produced by bacteria.

Diagnosis of bacterial infections are determined by laboratory stool cultures. The conventional test can take 48-72 hours to isolate the bacteria causing the upset, leaving you without a diagnosis for a few days.

Our PCR testing can expedite this testing by submitting a stool sample through our provided media. Testing takes a few hours with results turned around same day as receipt of sample. We test for the most common bacteria and viruses causing the upset so your provider can prescribe the best course of action.

 Our panel covers:

– Campylobacter group

– Salmonella species

– Shigella species

– Vibrio Group

– Yersinia Enterocolitica

– Shiga toxin 1

– Shiga toxin 2

– And the viral targets of Norovirus and Rotavirus group A
